Awarded annually by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police and the Ontario Minister of Transportation, the “Traffic Safety Initiative of the Year” award is presented to the police organization creating, developing and implementing Ontario’s most successful traffic safety program. On June 26th 2007, Chief Bruce J. Davis and Staff Sergeant Steven Wilson from South Simcoe Police Service accepted the award on behalf of the South Simcoe Police for the “Safely Home” road safety campaign. The campaign was developed in 2006 after 52 reportable collisions had occurred on Canal Road over a 5-year history. The program continues to effectively reduce the number of injuries and fatalities on Canal Road through education and stepped-up traffic enforcement.
