Traffic Safety through both public education and enforcement remains a priority of the South Simcoe Police Service. In 2005, there were over 230,000 motor vehicle collisions in Ontario which resulted in almost 50,000 injuries.  Most of these collisions could have been prevented.

In June 2007, the South Simcoe Police was recognized by the Minister of Transportation and the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police as a leader in road safety when it was awarded the "Traffic Safety Initiative of the Year" award for police services under 500 members.

The South Simcoe Police currently has five(5) constables and one(1) sergeant dedicated full time to road safety in our communities.  The unit is mandated with the following responsibilities;

  • Identifying traffic problem areas.
  • Speed control through both RADAR and LIDAR enforcement.
  • Collision investigation.
  • Technical collision reconstruction at fatal and serious personal injury motor vehicle collisions.
  • Snowmobile patrol and enforcement on our roads, the OFSC  Trails, Lake and Rivers.
  • Reducing impaired driving through R.I.D.E programs and impaired driving enforcement.
  • Investigate possible impaired drivers reported through the Safe Roads...You Call program.
  • Motorcycle Patrols.
  • Attending community complaint areas and enforcement.
  • Coordinating special events, parades and festivals.

The unit also participates in several programs and initiatives which are designed to enhance road safety.  They include;

  • The Cottage Patrol program
  • Project ERASE (eliminate racing activity on streets everywhere)
  • The Cross with Care pedestrian safety program.
  • The Safe Roads...Your Call program.
  • The Safely Home campaign.
  • Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspections.
  • The Road Watch program
