Eliminate Racing Activity on Streets EverywhereProject ERASE

Since 1999, 43 people have been killed in Ontario as a result of street racing activities. In addition, excessive speed continues to be the leading contributing factor in fatal collisions. Project E.R.A.S.E. is a result of the collaborative effort of 21 police services, the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of the Environment.

The goal of E.R.A.S.E. Program is:

"To change poor driver behaviour through education and strategic enforcement."

Street racing is an illegal and dangerous activity jeopardizing the lives of innocent people like:

  • Andrea Pike, a 29 year-old mother of two, was tragically killed by a street racer on May 30, 2000.
  • Tahir Khan, a 46 year-old father and taxi driver, who was killed by two street racers on January 24, 2006.
  • David Virgoe, a 48 year-old professional truck driver and grandfather, who was killed in an alleged street race on June 20, 2007.

Street racing has been occurring since the automobile was created. In the 1990’s, street racing reached epidemic proportions. Streets in the Greater Toronto Area were frequented by street racers. In 1996, three officers from York Regional Police, Peel Regional Police and the Ontario Provincial Police created “Operation Dragnet”. The officers pooled their resources and dedicated themselves to develop an innovative enforcement and awareness strategy to address street racing.

For the last 12 years, the program has expanded and evolved into what is now called “Project E.R.A.S.E." (Eliminate Racing Activity on Streets Everywhere).

Officers from 21 different police services, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation and the Ontario Ministry of Environment continue to work collaboratively targeting street racing.

Our motto is simple, “IF YOU RACE, THE STREET IS NOT THE PLACE!"
